Barbra Streisand speaks out on Melissa McCarthy Ozempic comment following backlash

Fans were left stunned by Barbra Streisand's comments on Melissa McCarthy's on Instagram

Barbra Streisand has tried to silence those raging on social media over her comments to Melissa McCarthy.

Yesterday (April 30), the music star seemed to raise some eyebrows after she left a comment many took issue with.

After commenting on actress Melissa McCarthy’s Instagram page, Streisand claims she just wanted to compliment her friend about her appearance and... well the internet did its thing.

The images showed the Bridesmaids actor in a green dress, jacket and boot combo arm-in-arm with director friend Adam Shankman.

The caption read: "Pastels only to honor the incredible @matthewbourne13 at the @ctgla gala last night with this fella @adamshankman !! Thiiiiis much closer to my dream of dancing on stage."

In a now deleted comment, Streisand wrote: "Give him my regards did you take Ozempic?"

Many took issue with the comment and questioned why Streisand felt the need to comment on McCarthy’s body in the first place.

Beyond this, the conversation around using Ozempic as a weight loss drug opposed to its intended use as an injection to manage blood glucose levels in people with type two diabetes continues to be divisive.

Hoping to quell the outrage from some users, Streisand has since posted on her own social media page explaining her actions.

“OMG. I went on Instagram to see the photos we’d posted of the beautiful flowers I'd received for my birthday,” Streisand said about her comment on X.

“Below them was a photo of my friend Melissa McCarthy who I sang with on my Encore album. She looked fantastic. I just wanted to pay her a compliment. I forgot the world is reading,”

While the singer’s explanation didn’t win over everyone, others gave her the benefit of the doubt.

“Totally understandable. I am certain Melissa McCarthy didn’t give it a second thought. She knows the true You and all the wonderful reasons why you’re both friends,” one fan commented.

“In your defense, this is exactly how my grandma texts me: responds to something with well wishes and then immediately pivots into an unfiltered inquiry about my existence,” another commented.

“That’s what I thought. She thought it was a private message. It’s not that big of a deal,” a third wrote.

“I understood where you were coming from, we shouldn’t sweat the small stuff, we’ve got BIGGER issues to contend with,” another added.

UNILAD previously contacted Barbra Streisand and Melissa McCarthy's representatives for comment.
